Module Learning

At the start of this module (USC1001 - Critical Thinking and Communication), my goal was to approach engineering problems from multiple perspectives and develop effective solutions. I have made some progress by researching articles on the topic I was working on and collaborating closely with my teammates, which allowed me to consider the technical, ethical, and practical aspects of problems. This process has helped me understand the importance of evaluating challenges from various angles. However, I still tend to focus too heavily on technical solutions and sometimes overlook stakeholder perspectives. To improve, I plan to engage in more case studies and practice reflective writing, which will help me develop a more holistic approach to problem-solving. Additionally, I aimed to improve my presentation skills and become more confident in engaging my audience. While I have made efforts to organise my presentations and use visual aids to clarify ideas, I still struggle with nervousness, especially when speaking to larger groups. This sometimes affects my ability to speak confidently and connect with the audience.

In conclusion, this module has helped me progress toward my goals by deepening my critical thinking and communication skills. Through various group projects and assignments, I gained practical experience in areas where I can improve, such as managing nerves and improving audience engagement. To continue improving, I will seek regular feedback, practice consistently, and apply these skills in different settings. I believe that by continuing to focus on these areas, I will be better prepared to tackle complex engineering problems and communicate my ideas effectively.

Project Learning

For my group's research project on the Boeing 737-MAX MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System), a primary focus was improving my writing skills, particularly in how to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely. I realised that I often get caught up in technical details, which can overwhelm readers. I learnt that simplifying concepts without losing accuracy is key, especially in oral presentations. I also recognised the importance of revising early and seeking feedback to improve clarity and effectiveness. My teammates brought valuable strengths to the project: one excelled at making complex ideas accessible, while others helped structure our paper logically. This experience taught me the value of collaboration in enhancing the quality of writing. I now understand that mastering a topic is not just about comprehending it but also about communicating it effectively. Writing and explaining technical content is crucial for knowledge sharing and the successful communication of ideas.

Moving forward, I will focus on improving my ability to convey technical information in simpler terms, while also valuing feedback and collaboration. This project has highlighted the significance of clear communication, both in academic and professional settings.
